Federico P Girardi, M.D.

Dr. Federico Girardi is an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at HSS and a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He specializes in the surgical treatment of spinal disorders, including but not limited to degenerative (disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, stenosis), deformity, (scoliosis, kyphosis, flat back), metabolic (osteoporosis), and fractures and tumors of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.

As the Research Director of the Spine Service, Dr. Girardi has extensive clinical research experience. His major areas of interest include minimally invasive surgery, clinical outcomes of different surgical procedures, and imaging modalities of the spine. He also conducts research to expand our core understanding of the basic science of bone, disc, and nerve tissue regeneration. Noteworthy is Dr. Girardi’s exploration of spinal fusion alternatives in the treatment of degenerative disc disease. He is a prolific author, and his work has appeared in multiple peer-reviewed professional journals. He has published more than 250 articles and textbook sections, along with 60+ book chapters. Dr. Girardi has served the advance of medical knowledge over many years through his editorial appointments to multiple prestigious medical journals. This contribution has included acting as an Editorial Reviewer for SPINE, Journal of Orthopedic Research, British Medical Journal and European Spine Journal.

As an internationally renowned educator and lecturer, he has been invited to contribute to the training and knowledge of physicians in all stages of their medical careers; from resident to attending to private practice. He has delivered hundreds of lectures around the world on topics ranging from minimally invasive spinal surgery to complex revision surgery. He has demonstrated and taught advanced surgical techniques to surgical audiences in many countries including Argentina Australia, Austria, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Dubai, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Mexico, Netherlands, Portugal, Qatar, Spain, Sweden, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay.

Dr. Girardi has been at the Hospital for Special Surgery since 1996. He has completed no less than three advanced, specialty fellowships in spinal surgery, deformity revision surgery and metabolic bone. He currently performs over 400 spinal surgeries per year. He and his medical team offer care in multiple languages including Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian.
