Andrea’s Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF) Surgery

Posted on: March 13th, 2023 by Our Team

For several months to even a year prior to my surgery my back was progressively getting worse. I couldn’t stand for very long and I had trouble walking. I typically walk about 2 miles a day walking my dogs and I couldn’t even walk them a 1/4 of a mile without being in tremendous pain. I also like to travel and explore, and my pain limited me on where I go to travel. My surgical experience was great. Everyone was so nice. I just wanted to get it over with and they made it very easy.

Post surgically I think I’m doing fine. I am now able to walk without ANY pain. Walked for 5 miles with no issues at all and traveled to Tahiti with no issues.

Before the surgery I tried a chiropractor, and I also went for physical therapy which only made the pain worse. I went to a wonderful pain management doctor near me and had 2 injections at L4/L5. The first injection worked for 5 days. I felt amazing in those 5 days and was very upset that it didn’t last. The second injection in the same area only lasted 2 days.

I saw several surgeons. One other surgeon recommended surgery, but I wasn’t feeling comfortable with this doctor. Another doctor near me didn’t see why I would be in so much pain and wanted to do an invasive procedure to determine my pain tolerance. I did my research, and this procedure could make my injury worse and decided not to proceed with this doctor. Dr. Girardi was highly recommended by a friend who had surgery with him. I liked his personality and felt that I would be in great hands. He and his staff answered all my questions and made me comfortable with proceeding with my XLIF surgery at L3/L4 and L4/L5.
