Barry’s Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion and Laminectomy Patient Story

Posted on: March 13th, 2023 by Our Team

As a 78-year-old I came to see Dr. Girardi with serious concerns about my spinal health, physical limitations, and pain – as well as about having surgery at that age. I had previously had cervical spine fusions and lumbar laminectomies sixteen years prior but could no longer walk or stand for any period. Dr. Girardi’s immediate concern was re: my cervical spine, with a need for imminent surgery because of the risk of spinal cord damage and paralysis. Surgery in June 2022 extended and revised the prior cervical surgery and was totally successful!

Three months later Dr. Girardi operated on my lumbar spine, and again extended and revised the prior laminectomies. While I am still in physical therapy, I am now able to stand at length with few or no issues, walk a mile at a time, and am planning a 50th anniversary trip with my wife that involves extensive walking. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Girardi for his skill, expertise, caring and personal qualities, and to his team and to the seamless care at HSS.
