Ben’s Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Patient Story

Posted on: October 25th, 2025 by Our Team

As a junior in college, I underwent a microdiscectomy at the L4-L5 level in Milwaukee. I remember the doctor joking about needing a new car—but at the time, I had drop foot, and as someone in their early 20s, I knew something had to be done.

Around 2011, I had another surgery in Naples, Florida. Unfortunately, it led to multiple complications and left me severely depressed. In the mid-2010s, I had three more spinal fusions at Mt. Sinai with a surgeon I respect deeply. However, because the procedure was out-of-network, I sometimes wonder if shortcuts were taken. I’m not angry about it—just reflective.

Now, I’m recovering from extensive cervical spine surgery. Of all my experiences, Dr. Girardi stands out. He’s well known across the floor where his patients recover—and he knows most of them by name. That speaks volumes, not only about how much he cares for his patients but also for the staff caring for them.

You may have never met him, but he has a way of making you feel close—like family. Safe. He doesn’t carry himself with hubris, yet you instantly feel you’re in good hands.

I still have healing pain, and Dr. Girardi has had me in rehab longer than any of my previous surgeons—but I’m okay with that. I’m comfortable with the process. I may not be able to finish everything I set out to do… but I’ve got my fingers crossed that this is the last spinal surgery I’ll ever need.

This photo was taken about 10 weeks after my ACDF surgery. It was during a 6+ mile hike in Bend, Oregon, to a place called the Blue Pool, while visiting friends. It was my idea to challenge myself—and I did, thanks to Dr. G. I pushed harder than I probably should have. But it was worth it. I don’t regret it for a second. Because I know the surgery I received was solid, trusted, and true.
