Robert’s Laminectomy and Spinal Fusion Patient Story

When I was diagnosed with severe lumbar spinal stenosis, I felt stuck. Every pain management doctor I consulted told me the same thing: that no treatment would help. It was frustrating and disheartening to hear that nothing could be done, especially when the pain and weakness were affecting my ability to walk even a block.

After a thorough evaluation, I underwent a laminectomy and spinal fusion at the L4–L5 level. The procedure was a turning point. Dr. Girardi spoke with such confidence that he would be able to fix my condition, and at that moment I knew he was the doctor for me.

My surgical experience was truly exceptional. Every person I encountered during my three days at HSS was compassionate, professional, and attentive. The level of care I received was second to none.

Luckily, I experienced very little pain beyond the first week, I just felt tightness in my lower back, and I was completely off all pain medications just one week after surgery. I haven’t felt this good in years.

These days, I’m walking daily and back on my Peloton. I’m looking forward to returning to the activities I love—weightlifting, skiing, basketball, soccer, and hiking. Recovery has been better than I could have imagined, and I’m grateful for the care that made it possible.
